Het Vijfde Seizoen

PUSH HERE

In 2016 the artists Marieke Zwart and Dirk van Lieshout lived and worked in the grounds of the psychiatric institution in Den Dolder. The PUSH HERE exhibition at Casco/FOTODOK in Utrecht presents the results of their collaboration with patients.

During their residency at Het Vijfde Seizoen – The Fifth Season – the artists explored various forms of collaboration with the institution’s patients. The interactive method used by Marieke Zwart and Dirk van Lieshout resulted in works that raise questions about inclusion and equality, as well as about the possibility or impossibility of sharing experiences with people who you initially perceive to be very different from yourself.

Marieke Zwart

Zwart undertook physical exercises with patients that involved holding each other in balance. In a series of six short videos the communication between patients and the artist alternates between hilarious, awkward and poignant.

Also on show is the paper that she manufactured with patients, made using old medical dossiers and treatment manuals from the institution. Zwart has also produced a series of new drawings for this exhibition.

Dirk van Lieshout

Dirk van Lieshout set up a laboratory with found materials from the woods, such as leaves, herbs and tree-bark. Van Lieshout also designed a ‘tea bike’, a pedal-powered tearoom on which the institution’s patients and staff could cycle around and make tea from tree-bark and leaves. The various cycling trips were recorded on film and this footage is being presented in an immersive installation.

Robbert Roos, director of Kunsthal KAdE and board member of The Fifth Season, will open the exhibition on 21 July 16.30 hrs. and present the publication the Tea Bike by Dirk van Lieshout.
