Annemiek Vera

Annemiek Vera made a series of paintings which were strongly influenced by all her contacts, impressions and discoveries during her stay in Het Vijfde Seizoen. She arrived on the grounds with the idea that many residents would automatically start visiting her. Hoewever, this direct contact didn’t just happen instantly. Vera utilized this ‘calm before the storm’ to visit the Historisch Archief Den Dolder (historical archives). Here she found photos of patients from the early twentieth century. She portrayed some of these patients on canvas of 200 by 130 centimeters. By using such large dimensions, she gives the stigmatized individuals, as she puts it, ‘a new identity and a different right to exist’.
