Het Vijfde Seizoen

Antoinette NausikaƤ & Marc van Kempen

Summer 2008

Nausikaä and Van Kempen are both graduates of the Rietveld Academy, and primarily work with photography and video. In Het Vijfde Seizoen, they wanted to work with the residents and therefore bought thirteen video cameras so that the patients could film what they wanted even when the artists weren't around. This caused a bit of commotion, because in a mental institution a camera is mainly seen as an instrument that can invade privacy. Yet the project ultimately produced interesting material. Filming requires openness: opening yourself up to the way that another person looks at things, showing interest, asking something of someone, giving something of yourself. From the footage, the artist made a film that reflects this honesty and openness.
