Het Vijfde Seizoen

Marieke Zwart

Autumn 2016

During her residency, Marieke Zwart investigated how equality and balance between herself and others could be created. Zwart worked with the patients on a video work in which they attempted to achieve physical balance through one-to-one balance positions. In addition different perspectives for creative collaboration with patients were explored through the input of ideas and personal talents.

At the same time, Zwart started a paper production with old paper. The use of paper in the field of psychiatry refers to the many reports and notes on which patients depend largely. With the help of the old paper retrieval service, Zwart collected medical documents, leaflets and books. Subsequently she invited patients to experiment with this psychiatric paper world, from tearing and decomposing old paper to creating new craft paper.

Marieke Zwart (1987) lives and workes in Amsterdam. She studied Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the Master Artistic Research at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Together with Lotte Nijhof she founded Arts Initiative BERM in 2010. At the moment she is a guest lecturer at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and in January 2017 she will start the two-year residency at the Rijksakademie Amsterdam.

In her work she explores spaces of contact, through a practice that is based on drawing and video works. Her works are built from socially engaged practices, reflecting on art historical and social problematics. Subjects of interest are relations between artists and models, the value of work and time and the authority and gestures of the artist's hand. Zwart applies the medium drawing as a tool to research, analyze and intensify the labour of looking.

In 2014 she did a residency in Curacao, supported by the Mondrian Fund where she worked on several projects with psychiatric patients and art students at the Instituto Buena Bista. She kept a blog of images, see: www.mariekezwart.nl/index.php?/website/work-2014

Marieke started a similar blog for during her residency at Het Vijfde Seizoen: www.mariekezwart.nl/index.php?/vijfde-seizoen
