Sayaka Abe

Japanese artist Sayaka Abe created a project about feeling with clients of the psychiatric hospital FUKURODA Hospital, north of Tokyo. Sayaka Abe was born in Japan and works in the Netherlands and Japan. Central to her work is the encounter with a person or a group. Her work deals with being lonely, growing old or being outside society.

Nina Glockner & Sachi Miyachi

This artist duo worked for several months in 2019 with a group of people at Fukuroda Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in northern Japan. The facade of the hospital inspired them to make an origami hat out of paper.

The artists made a life-size replica with the group by gluing and folding A3 sheets. The hat grew in volume, and with the help of patients, nurses and visitors, the hat became so big that they could all stand under it. In this way, the hat offered a kind of shelter. A symbolism that later proved applicable to the impact of typhoon Hagibis (October 2019), in which the home of some hospital staff was destroyed.
