Het Vijfde Seizoen

Exhibition Kaleidoscope

From March 30th to April 1th, photography students of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy showed the results of their residency at Het Vijfde Seizoen. Under the guidance of teachers Hanne Hagenaars and Vincent Zedelius, they explored psychiatry from their specialization photography from January to March 2017.

Anna Lenartowska, Enrico Garzaro, Maxi Pfeil, Olaf Roukens, Qianyun Zhang, Sophie Wurnig, Tobias Groot, Yusuf Zucchero and Zara Glaser used photography to collect information about the surroundings of the mental health institute Altrecht where the residency is located.

What does it mean to live at Altrecht in Den Dolder? How does the infrastructure interact with the patients of the institute? How do the surroundings define the people they meet and how are they defined by it? Who is the visitor, who is the resident and who is the employee?

These are all questions that the students investigated through using both old and new photographic techniques. They brought a large format camera, scanners and printers to the studio house of Het Vijfde Seizoen and built a dark room in the toilet. By looking through the cameras and studing the prints, they shifted their perspective and exposed the unknown.

The exhibition was made up of photographs, videos and small sculptures. Among these were glass lenses that reflect the space they are placed in. These are images that show us what is left when it’s completely dark and how light defines the space and atmosphere.
