Het Vijfde Seizoen

In the Spring of 2018, the artists Jan Adriaans, Gerwin Luijendijk and Marianna Maruyama worked at the residency The Fifth Season on the grounds of the Mental Health Institute Altrecht Ggz and Fivoor Forensic care. This is where the Third Potential came about: a project about language in relation to safety and security in a psychiatric environment.

. . . Somewhere in a woody area in the Netherlands. Three men standing watchful in front of a psychiatric institute (their stage?). They greet everyone who enters (the choreography?), They play a role, they ride their bikes on the terrain (with props?), They follow their directors, they discuss strategies for cooperation with the neighborhood (the audience?) And they wear uniforms (costumes?). They all agree that this job is different from their previous jobs.

What does it mean to be a security guard? To have a profession that makes people feel safe? The Third Potential portrays security guards in an abstract way and research their verbal and non-verbal communication. The nine screen video-installation shows the paradox of protection and threat. The presence of a security team can make us feel safe and at the same time raises the question: 'Are we safe here?'

The Third Potential took place in Beautiful Distress House from Nov. 22 up and until Dec. 16, 2018.

Jan Adriaans, Gerwin Luijendijk and Marianna Maruyama were selected by the Mondriaan Fund for a working period at The Fifth Season. The exhibition The Third Potential presents the result of this residency and is a co-production of The Fifth Season and BeamLab. The Third Potential is made possible by Altrecht GGZ, The Mondriaan Fund and Fivoor Forensic and Intensive Psychiatric care.
